Source:The Bulwark discussing whether the Republican Party could've stopped Donald J. Trump. |
"Trump wins voters who don't read The New York Times or listen to The Bulwark Podcast, and elite opposition may not be enough to defeat him. Ross Douthat joins Tim Miller for a spirited debate about what the conservative movement gave away in sacrifice to Trump on world leadership, abortion, and democracy."
From The Bulwark
I guess what New York Times conservative columnist Ross Douthat's point here about let's say the populist-right (if not far-right) of the Republican Party is, if Liberals (I guess he means real Liberals and not the so-called Squad) are in favor of... then the MAGA wing of the Republican Party is against it.
So to sum this up: if the Joe Biden wing of the Democratic Party, which was once the Henry Jackson/John F. Kennedy wing of the Democratic Party, is against Russia and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, (which is now a democratic republic, unlike Russia) then MAGA is pro-Vladimir Putin and the Russian Nationalists.
If Joe Biden and the rest of the Liberal Democrats are in favor of the rule of law, then MAGA is opposed to it.
If Joe Biden and the Liberal Democrats support limited government, checks and balances, American democracy, free trade, then MAGA is against all these American liberal values, that so-called Conservative Republicans once supported, then MAGA is against it.
Imagine a political candidate announcing on the campaign trail that they're against everything that their opponent is in favor of, without even knowing what their opponent supports or opposes and what the consequences of those positions are: "I'm against it because he's in favor of it and I want to beat him." That's what Ross Douthat is basically saying here.
What Ross Douthat is basically saying here is that MAGA wants to beat the Liberal Democrats so badly and take a stand against New Haven, Manhattan, the Hampton Islands, etc, all those great liberal democratic places in America, where freedom and wealth run rampant, even if their opposition hurts America. And wile they're doing that, they're raising their campaign money in New Haven, Manhattan, the Hamptons, because there's only so much campaign money to go around in West Virginia, Kentucky, Southern Ohio, and all of these MAGA enclaves.
When Olivia Nuzzi from New York Magazine, when Tim Miller from The Bulwark, and other center-right, Never-Trump Republicans call MAGA members political nihilists, they know what they're talking about. Because it's not about political values and what they would do if they were ever in power. But instead simply about beating the Liberals, getting into power and keeping that power indefinitely.
