MLB Classics: Video: ABC Sports: MLB 1983-MLB World Series-Game 5: Baltimore Orioles @ Philadelphia Phillies: Full Game

This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on WordPress

What makes the 1983 World Series different from the 1979 World Series that the Orioles had a 3-1 series lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1979, as opposed to the Phillies in 83, is the Orioles pitching and their hitting. The Phillies other than the really the first game of this series, were pretty much shut down offensively in this series. Including getting shut out in game 5 to clinch the Series for the Orioles. Unlike game 5, 6 and seven in the 79 World Series against the Pirates, the Orioles got all the pitching, key runs and key hits in game 5 of the 83 Series and for most this World Series as well.

The Phillies had a very solid lineup in 83, but you shut down 3B Mike Schmidt and you could pretty much shut down the Phillies lineup. Then throw in the fact that Joe Morgan their leadoff hitter was forty-years old, Pete Rose is forty-two and their 1B Tony Perez is thirty-nine years old and all of these players being great at one point, but were all at the end of their careers against the Orioles in this series. As well as the Phillies not having the pitching that the Pirates did in 79. Everything was set up for the Orioles to win the 83 World Series. The only question was, would they come through or not.

MLB Classics: Video: NBC Sports: MLB 1971-World Series-Game 7: Pittsburgh Pirates @ Baltimore Orioles: Full Game

The Orioles blew great opportunities to put together a real dynasty in the 1970s and become the MLB team of the 1970s.  Yes, they won two World Series from 1966-71 and won three American League Championships and four AL Eastern Championships from 1966-73.  They could easily have accomplished so much more but instead they lost the 1969 World Series to the New York Mets, an inferior team even with their great pitching.  They then did not play up to their capabilities against the Pirates in the 1971 World Series.

NBC Sports: MLB 1979- ALCS Game 3- Baltimore Orioles @ Anaheim Angels: Full Game

Source:MLB Home Video- former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres 1B Steve Garvey.

"Steve Garvey is the host of Baseball's Greatest Games, a weekly cable TV show from the early 90's.  Some innings were edited out to make time for a 2-hour broadcast.

Game 3 of the 1979 ALCS being played at Anaheim Stadium. And if you guessed Anaheim Stadium is located in Anaheim, California, you have a solid grasp of the obvious.

It's ironic that 1979 would be the season that the Anaheim Angels would finally make to postseason play, since this was the last season before the converted what was a beautiful baseball park, to what would become another artificial, multipurpose stadium, with the Los Angeles Rams moving to Anaheim in 1980 and becoming the Anaheim Rams. But pre-football, Anaheim was similar to Royals Stadium in Kansas City, except Anaheim has always had grass. It was a beautiful ballpark.

NBC Sports: MLB 1986-GOW-6/14-New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles: Full Game

Source:The Daily Journal

The Orioles started the first of three straight losing seasons in 1986. And 5-6 losing seasons from 1986-91, going through a pretty bad stretch of bad baseball as they closed out Baltimore Memorial Stadium in 1991. 1986 dealing with a bunch of injuries that season and key hitters like Eddie Murray and Fred Lynn dealing with injuries. While the Yankees were still contending, but again not making the playoffs in 1986.

With the Orioles, they were dealing with key injuries to their best players and hitters especially in Murray and Lynn. You’re talking about two of the best all around players in the game at this point. And two of the best power hitters in the game as well. And when your team isn’t that deep to begin with, losing a Lynn and Murray at the same time is really difficult. 1986, very similar as 1984, 87 and 88 for the Yankees. A very solid lineup offensively, but not enough starting pitching and enough depth in the bullpen. For the Yankees to win the AL East, which was a great division back then and still is today.
